Detroit Lakes track and field athletes test skills at Hamline Elite Meet

The Lakers took home two top-ten finishers against the best track and field talents in Minnesota.

ST. PAUL — Four Detroit Lakes track and field athletes took to the track or hit the field for the Hamline Elite Meet on Friday, April 26.

Kids from across the state gather at Hamline University’s Klas Field for Minnesota’s premier track and field meet. Athletes from across all three classes qualified by having the top 9-16 best times or distances in the state.

Senior Grace Gunderson participated in the high jump. She soared to third place with a leap of 5 feet, 4 inches. Gunderson was two inches behind first-place winner Blooming Prairie’s Annaka Forsberg. Senior Rylee Johnson competed in her top event – the 100-meter hurdles. Johnson, unfortunately, did not place being disqualified during the race.

Senior Isaac Cariveau muscled his way to a qualifying spot in the shot put. He tossed the metal ball 51 feet, 4 inches to secure 10th place. Senior Brandton Marsh was one of 12 athletes to qualify for the triple jump. He ended the day in 11th place after leaping 42 feet, 8.25 inches.
