Shamrock Marathon prompts road closures this weekend in Virginia Beach

The 53rd Yuengling Shamrock Marathon is back in Virginia Beach, prompting road closures in the Oceanfront area over the weekend.

The 8K race and Operation Smile Final Mile take place Saturday, and the half and full marathons are Sunday. The closures and reopenings are as follows:

Saturday, 5 a.m.

Closures will begin on Pacific Avenue and Atlantic Avenue from 25th to 35th streets to accommodate for the Townebank Shamrock 8K race, or about 5 miles, and the Operation Smile Final Mile.

Saturday, 7 a.m.

Traffic will be restricted at Rudee Loop to 25th Street and on Atlantic Avenue from 35th to 38th streets.

Saturday, 1 p.m.

The city estimates that all roads will be back open.

Sunday, 5 a.m.

Sunday will have more extensive closures for the half marathon and full marathon. The city will restrict access the southbound lanes of Atlantic Avenue from the Cavalier to 47th Street. The northbound lanes will have “limited access.” Atlantic Avenue will also be closed from 35th to 40th streets.

Pacific Avenue will be closed at 5 a.m. from the Cavalier to 35th Street.

Sunday, 6:30 a.m.

The city will close Atlantic Avenue from 22nd to 35th streets.

Sunday, 7 a.m. 

There will be no access on Atlantic Avenue from the Cavalier to 89th Street. Shore Drive will close from the Fort Story West Gate to Atlantic Avenue and 83rd Street. The feeder road on the west side of Atlantic Avenue from 50th Street will be open for neighborhood traffic.

Sunday, 8 a.m.

Access will close on Atlantic Avenue from Rudee Loop to 9th Street. The city will also close General Booth Boulevard’s northbound lane from Prosperity Road to 5th Street and the Rudee Bridge. The roadway is also closed on Birdneck Road from General Booth Boulevard to the State Military Reservation entrance at Jefferson Avenue.

There will be “limited access” on Pacific Avenue and General Booth Boulevard. The southbound lane will be open from 9th Street to Oceana Boulevard. Birdneck Road’s eastbound lanes will be open for neighborhood traffic to Prosperity Road.

The city is encouraging drivers to use the Waze navigation app, which will be updated with closures.

Sunday, 3:30 p.m.

According to the city, roads will be reopened for traffic.
