South Carolina football star LaNorris Sellers wins USC's Male Athlete of the Year award

On Monday, the University of South Carolina held its annual Gamecock Gala. Players and coaches from all across the Athletic Department dressed to the nines to celebrate each team’s and player’s achievements across the 2024-2025 academic year.
In what should probably be a surprise to no one, quarterback LaNorris Sellers brought home the 2025 Male Athlete of the Year honor. Fellow Gamecock standouts Collin Murray-Boyles (men’s basketball) and Nathan Franks (men’s golf) were the other two nominees for the award. Last year, wide receiver Xavier Legette won the distinction after an All-American campaign.
Sellers’ selection comes on the back of a season in which he led Carolina to the College Football Playoff doorstep. Had a moment or two (or a penalty flag) gone in a different direction, the Gamecocks could have been playing in the 12-team postseason tournament.
Even so, Sellers posted a remarkable statistical season. The redshirt freshman logged over 3200 yards of total offense and 25 total touchdowns. He recorded the most successful single month in South Carolina football history, throwing and running for a combined 15 combined touchdowns during the month of November. He also set several Gamecock freshman records en route to All-SEC honors and multiple SEC Freshman of the Year accolades.

Sellers will be back to defend his crown next season. The redshirt sophomore will lead the Gamecocks onto the field on August 31st to begin the 2025 season. South Carolina will take on Virginia Tech in Atlanta’s Mercedes-Benz Stadium in the opener.
Following his breakout first year as USC’s starter, Sellers has earned Heisman Trophy hype this offseason. At the conclusion of spring practice, he also picked up the Gamecocks’ Offensive Player of the Spring award.
